What is Transfer Durak?
Transfer Durak (Perevodnoy) is the most popular variant of the Russian fool card game. Its defining feature is the defender's ability to transfer the attack to the next player instead of defending. This turns the game into a true duel of intellect and calculation: every move is a choice between active defense and a tactical pass-through.
Rules of Transfer Durak
The base rules are identical to Classic (Podkidnoy) Durak: a 36-card deck, a trump suit, refilling to 6 cards, and the goal of shedding all cards before your opponents do.
The Key Difference: The Transfer
When an attack card is played against you, you have three options:
- Defend — beat the card by standard rules.
- Pick up — take all cards from the table.
- Transfer — add your own card of the same rank. The attack passes to the next player clockwise, and they become the new defender.
When Transfers Are Forbidden
- If the next player holds fewer cards than are already on the table (they physically cannot defend the entire stack).
- If the transfer card's rank does not match what is on the table.
- In game modes where transfers are explicitly disabled.
Transferring with a Trump
If the table holds a regular card and you transfer with a same-rank trump, it counts as a legal transfer. But think twice — trumps are precious endgame resources.
Strategies for Transfer Durak
Save Cards of the Same Rank
A transfer requires a second card of the same rank. Hold on to rank pairs — they are your «ticket» to pass the attack along.
Transfer Toward the Weakest Player
If your left-hand neighbor is short on trumps or holds few cards, aim the attack at them. You'll force them to pick up more.
Beware of Wasting Trumps
Transferring with a high trump is almost always a strategic mistake. Save those trumps for critical late-game defense.
Count the Rounds
A transfer chain can loop back to you after a full table rotation. Track which players have already shown cards of the rank in question.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many transfers can happen in a row?
As many as the rules and players' hands allow. A chain of 3–4 transfers is routine in skilled play.
Can you transfer a thrown-in card?
No. Transfers are only legal against the first attack card. Once the defense has begun and additional cards are thrown in, transfers are no longer permitted.
What happens if a transfer is rejected?
If the attempted transfer is illegal, the turn returns to the defender — they must either defend or pick up.
How is Transfer Durak different from Podkidnoy?
In Podkidnoy, the defender can only defend or pick up. In Transfer Durak, a third option is added — the transfer. This makes the game significantly more dynamic and tactical.
