How to Play Durak Online — Beginner's Guide

Introduction

Durak is the most popular card game in Russia and the CIS. If you've never played or have forgotten the rules, this guide will take you from your first deal to your first win. In under 10 minutes you'll be ready to sit at the table.

Basic Rules in 5 Steps

  1. Deal. Each player receives 6 cards. The next card determines the trump suit.
  2. Start. The first turn belongs to the player holding the lowest trump.
  3. Attack. The attacker plays a card on the table. The defender must beat it with a higher-ranked card of the same suit or any trump.
  4. End of the round. The defender either beats all cards (which go to the discard pile) or picks them up into their hand.
  5. End of the game. The first player to shed all cards wins. The last player holding cards becomes the «fool».

Your First Game: Step by Step

Open the lobby, choose Classic mode, «No stakes» as the bet, and two players. This is the simplest format for learning the ropes.

  1. Click «Ready» — the game begins when all participants confirm.
  2. Look at your hand. Find your lowest trump — if it's yours, you go first.
  3. When attacking, click the card you want to play. Lead with low cards to save the high ones for later.
  4. When defending, click your card that can beat the attack. If nothing works, hit «Pick up».
  5. At the end of the round, both players refill to 6 cards (while the deck lasts).

Common Beginner Mistakes

  • Wasting trumps too early. Don't spend high trumps on easy attacks. Save them for the endgame.
  • Throwing in too greedily. Over-throwing leaves you with an empty hand and no flexibility.
  • Ignoring the stock. Track how many cards remain in the deck. Once it's empty, no more refills — strategy shifts radically.
  • Leading with a top card. Beginners often play the Ace of trumps first. That's a gift to the defender — they'll beat it cheaply.
  • Forgetting your neighbors. In games with 3+ players, watch every player who might throw in — not just your direct opponent.

Above all — play regularly. Durak is a game of habit and observation. The more matches you play, the better you'll read opponents' hands.
