What is Classic Durak?
Classic Durak (Podkidnoy) is the most well-known variant of the Russian card game. The defender has only two options — beat all incoming cards or pick them up. Everything else revolves around the attacker and throw-ins of matching ranks.
Rules of Classic Durak
Played with a 36-card deck (six through ace). Each player gets six cards, the next card determines the trump suit. The lowest trump holder attacks first.
Attack and Throw-Ins
The attacker plays one card. All other players (except the defender) may throw in cards of ranks already on the table — up to six attack-defense pairs per round. Trumps can be thrown in if the rank matches.
Defense
The defender must beat every attacking card with a higher card of the same suit or with any trump. If even one card cannot be beaten — the defender picks up everything.
End of Round
If everything is beaten, the pairs are discarded and the defender becomes the next attacker. If the defender picks up, the attack passes to the next player clockwise.
Classic vs Transfer Durak
In Classic, the defender only beats or picks up — transfers are not allowed. This makes the game more straightforward: fewer tactical branches, more pure attack-and-defense play. Most players start with Classic to learn the mechanics.
Classic Durak Strategy
- Ladder your throw-ins. Lead with low ranks, follow with higher. The defender burns through high cards and is more likely to pick up.
- Count the trumps. Nine trumps in the deck. If six are gone, opponents hold at most three.
- Hold back early. Save same-rank pairs for the endgame when the defender's hand is short.
- Protect the top trump. Ace and King of trumps are endgame weapons. Spend the small ones first.
